AN INDIAN'S HONESTY.
An old Indian once asked a white
man to give him some tobacca. The
man gave him a loose handful from
his pocket. The next day became
SEPTEMBER 15, 1906.
back and asked for the white man.
"For," said he, ' ; I found a qnarter
of a dollar among the tobacco leaves."
"Why don't you keep it?" asked
a by-stander.
"I've got a good man and a bad
man here," said the Indian pointing
to his breast; "and the good man
say, 'It is not mine; give it back to
the owner.' The bad man say, 'Never
mind; vou have it, and it is your
own now.' The good man say, *Xo
do! you must not keep it.' So I
never know what to do, and 1 think
to go to sleeo, but the good man
and the bad man keep talking all
nicrht, and trouble me. Now 1 bring
the m jney back, I feei good."
Like the old Indian we have all a.
good and bad man within us. The
bad man is temptation the good man
is Conscience: and they keep talking
for and against manv thing's -that we
do everv clav. Who wins?
"An! how sweet it is to die," said
the Blessed Margaret Mary, "when
we have had a constant devotion to
the Heart of Him Who is to judge
us."
A GOOD STORY.
A man had three friends, and for
two of these he had a very special
affection. One day he was brought
into court accused of a great crime,
though he was reallv innocent.
"Who amono- vou." said he to his
friends, "will come with me, and
give vitness in my favor?"
The first excused himslf on ac-
count of his occupations. The sec-
ond went with him as far as the door
of the court, then stooped and went
away home trembling with fear of
the iudo-e's anger. Tne third, who
was the one on whom he counted the
least, entered, spoke in his favor,
^ncl bore vitness to his innocence
with so much conviction that the
-judo-e not oulv gave him his iibertv
but even made him some compen
sation.
Man in this world has three friends.
When God calls nim at tne hour of
death, monev — the friend for whom
he has a special affection — does not
go along with him. His relations
and friends also accompany him to
the tomb, and then go away home.
The third — of whom he thought tne
least during life — this friend is his
good works. They alone keep h;m
company after he is in the presence
of the judge. Tney go before mm;
they sueaK in his favor; and they
obtain for him pardon and mercy.
Let us multiply our good works,
makiiio- them pass through the Sa-
cred He^rt of Jesus.

The Hand That Struck Mother.
Sister Thecla of St Bendictus, has
some quaint, pnatetic stories, in whicn
sue tries to influence her little peo-
ple. One morning she said very
solemnly:
••My dear little boys and girls,
are vou all good at nome? By tnat
i intend to asK if you do cneerfully
the little duties tnat crowd upon life
daily, sucn as drssiug yourself
quickly and neatly wnen motner
calls, and running to tne grocery
for the articles necessary, so you may
nave an early and pleasant breakfast.
••Pernaps an extra duty may come
up and you may feei disinclined to
it; possible fret and quarrel, or even,
may 1 say it, be saucy to tne good
mother. How mucn better if, with
pleasant, smiling countenance, you
tried tne tasK, and, naving it
finished, went merrily to school.
Shall 1 tell you a story of a
wretched, naughty boy, who lives,
1 heard in Newport? 1 am sure ne
never came to school here. He was
verv saucv and disobedient, and
often his motner cried herself to
sleep over his bad conduct. He
olaveel truant at aenool and tnougnt
nothintr of thieving on the corners
from the fruit and nut stands. He
seldom went to church, and good
Father Cyrinus had him down in a
verv black page in a blue book.
One day his mother asked him to
do an errand. -Directly,' he replied
indifferently.
Again she cailed, -please hurry."
"I'm o-oing he said coarsely."
Another long wait, and his mother,
picking up tne basket, put it into
nishand and said: -Hurry, or I shall
be late witn your fatner's dinner."
The bad boy lifted his hand and
struck her a stinging blow. Aston-
lsned and angry, she burst into tears
and said: -My boy, you will never
be able to forget that blow."
Shortly after, tne boy was very ill
and cried continually, "Oh, my arm,
my arm."
Tne doctors were perplexed by
tne strange disease, and could not
Keep him from suffering, save when
usintr strong norcotics. At last tne
bov died and was buried.
There was a knock at the door of
Aunt Fanny's pleasant kitchen one
morning, and on the steps stood a
little girl with a basket in her arm.
''Don't you want to buy something?"
she asked, as she came in. "Here are
some nice home-knit stockings."
"Surely you did not knit those stock-
ings yourself?" said Aunt Fann.y
"iSo, ma'm, but grandma did. She
is lame, and so she sits and knits
the things, and I run about and sell
them; that's the way we get along.
She says we are partners, and so I
wrote out a sign and put it over the
fireplace, 'Grandma and Maggie.'"
Aunt Fanny laughed and bought the
stockings, and as she counted out the
money to pay for them. Maggie said,
"This will buy bread and butter for
supper."
"What if you had not sold anythig?"
asked Aunt Fanny.
But Maggie shook her head.
"I'ou see, we prayed, 'Give us our
daily bread,' and God has promised
to hear when folks pray; so I guess
there wasn't any 'ifs' about it. When
he says things, they're sure and cer-
tain."-
manner that there was some check
intended.
"I will explain, Blanche. The first
sieve is, 'Is it true?"
"I suppose so," said the girl; "I got
it from Miss White, and she is a good
friend of Edith."
"And does she show her friendship
by telling tails of her? Though you
cannot prove it is true, the second
sieve is, 'is it kind?"
"I did not mean to be unkind, mam-
ma," said the girl, "but I'm afraid I was.
I should not like to have Edith speak
about me as I have spoken of her.
But what is the third sieve?"
"The third sieve is, 'is it necessary?' "
1 "No, mamma, ofcourse it is not. But
I think that it is a good idea, mam-
ma — three sieves for a story: *Is it true?'
'Is it kind?' Is it necessary?" I sup-
pose you mean that if a story cannot
pass those three sieves it should be
thrown out?"
"You have the idea, Blanche. Only
stories that have gone through three
sieves should be told about people."
DIED AT HIS POST,
A few weeks ago an ingeneer whose
train was approaching the city of Mon-
treal, in Canada, saw a large dog
standing on the track ahead. The dog
was barking furiously. The ingeneer
blew his whistle, yet the hound did
not budge. The train thundered on,
and the poor creature crouched low.
In another instant, the dog was struck
and hurled high in the air. Some bits
of white muslin on the cow-catcher,
caught the ingeneer's eye, aud so,
halting the train, he ran back to the
spot where the accident occurred. By
the side of the dead dog was a dead
child, which probably had wandered
on the trac'K and fallen asleep. The
poor, watchful guardian had given
its signal for the train to stop, but
unheeded, had died at his post,- a
victim to duty.
THE THREE SIEVES.
"0 mamma," said Blanche Phiipot,
il heard such a tale about Edith How-
ard, I did not think she could be so
bad. One—"
"My dear," interrupted Mrs, Philpot f
"before you go on, will you see if your
story will pass through the three
sieves."
"The three sieves!" What d> you
mean by three sieves?" inquired
Blanche; f j:' she knew by her mother's
Won a Place by a Whistle.
He was an odd-looking litle figure as
he came merrily whistling down the
street the morning after the big snow.
His nose was red, his hands were bare,
his feet were in shoes several sizes too
large, and his hat was held in place by a
roll of paper under the sweat-band; but
he piped away like a steam whistle,
and carried the big snow shovel much
as a marching soldier carries his rifle.
"How much?" from an imposing-look-
ing man, who was asked if he wanted
his walks cleaned.
"Ten cents."
"A nickel is enough."
"It would be if I couldn't do no
better; but I've got to do the best I
can, and business is rushing. Good
morning," and the merry whistle filled
the air as the boy started away.
"Go ahead and clean 'em" shouted
the man, whose admiration and better
nature had been aroused.
"Just see that little rascal make the
snow fly," he laughed to his wife,
who stood at the window with him.
"Why, he's a regular snow plow; and
he does it well, too."
"What a little mite! and how comi-
cal! I wonder if he's hungry?"
She called him in as soon as he
had finished, but he would not take
time for more than a cup of coffee.
"Too busy," he said."
"What are you going to do with the
money?"' asked the man, as he. insisted
on settling at twenty-five cents.
"I'm going to get mother a shawl
for Christmas, she's wearing one that
you can see through, and it ain't right."
On he went, with giowing cheeks
and his cheery whistle. But they had
his name and address. It was the
wife who took a shawl to the mother;
and it was the husband who installed
I the sturdy little snow- shoveler as office
boy in a bright new unifcrm, and with
' permission to whistle when he feels
like it.
